Ugandan Dancehall singer Buka Chimey, real name David Musolo, says he has been battling depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues.
Through a communication via his social media, Buka Chimey – known for songs like Biluma Abayaye, Tuli Wawelu, and Beer O,clock – noted that he has not been at his best for the last three years.
He reveals how he has been challenged by industry politics and some people have always fought hard to stunt his progress.
He claims certain individuals went an extra mile of paying media stations not to play his music and directing interviews that damaged his brand.
Buka Chimey is, however, in a better mental space at the moment having overcome his challenges and promises to make more music going forward.
It’s been a while since I last connected with any of you in the past three years. I’ve been on a difficult journey, battling depression, anxiety and fighting to find myself. During this challenging time, l’ve been focusing on finding my mental strength and rebuilding myself.
Music has always been my passion, but the industry’s politics took a heavy toll on me. Despite my hard efforts and investments, I found myself pushed out by certain individuals who wanted my career to fail, they paid certain Radio and TV Stations to stop playing my music for months, sent reporters to get self-driven interviews from me with an aim of seeing me fail. It was a tough, but I needed to step back and prioritize my mental health which I have been onto these past years.
I’m sharing this not to place blame or point fingers nor seek sympathy, but to explain my silence and raise awareness about the realities of living with depression and anxiety, especially in this tough industry.
To my incredible fans and loved ones who stood by me – thank you. Your support and love have been my light in the darkest moments. Let’s continue this journey together, lifting each other up and making more music. Much Love & Gratitude.
