With less than a week to the commence of the 13th edition of East Africa University Games to be hosted at Masero University in Kenya, Uganda’s representative, Kampala University has geared up to defend their title.
The Ggaba based University won the 2022 (12th edition) Netball title after beating countrymate, Victoria University on final. The Jesse Assiimwe coached side wants to defend the same title despite the fact that they have new faces on the team.
“The team that won the tournament in 2022 in Ndejje left, we remained with like two players, so we have a new team.” Jesse told this website .
“Since we got new players, we started our training very early compared to before, we have had practice matches and today we had one against men side, the girls lost 49-41 but I am impressed with the performance and i hope we’re good to go.” Said Kampala University Netball team coach – Jesse Assiimwe.
Kampala University is taking five sports disciplines in the championship; Netball, football boys and girls, Handball, Beach handball, Woodball and athletics.
The football team manager, Vincent Tumusiime also revealed that they are taking a youthful team that doesn’t have University football experience but he believes they can put a serious challenge.
“We have prepared well for the tournament, this time round we are taking very young players, many are coming for secondary, they are almost freshers but as Kampala University we build the philosophy in the players, so our training has been much on game understanding. ” Vincent Tumusiime aka Titi Kamara, head coach Kampala University Football team.
According to University sports tutor, Martha Soigi, the University contingent will set off to Kenya on Saturday.
The tournament is slated to commence on 15th December and climaxing on 21st December 2024.
Kampala University is not the only varsity that is representing Uganda, so far sixteen universities have confirmed their participation including; Kyambogo University, MUBS, Makerere University, Mountain of the Moon, Bishop Stuart University, Busitema University, Bugema University, Ndejje University, IUIU, Uganda Martyrs University,Gulu University, Muni University, MUST, Kampala International University and Kampala University.
