The debate between the two giant Masaza was partly settled by Crispus Sseruwugge in an epic opener held at Kitovu Sports Arena in Masaka on Saturday.
The three time champions Buddu took the first round advantage over the five time champions, Gomba with a 1-0 victory recorded under a fully packed Kitovu Arena.
The Pepsi University Football League winner with Uganda Martyrs University, Crispus Sseruwugge came with his trademark long range strike in dying minutes creating absolute craziness among the home fans.
Both sides played to a goalless stalemate in the first stanza.
Buddu’s midfield unit, orchestrated by the ever-composed Nicholas Jjonga and boosted by the electric runs of winger Godfrey Oyaka, dictated proceedings for most of the contest especially in the first stanza, the latter even has the chance to hand the host the lead before the break but Gomba’s custodian, Senyonjo Julius was equal to the challenge.
Despite losing to their nemesis, Gomba looked a very competitive side and it can be very early to write them off.
Eighteen counties are battling for glory in this year’s edition, which runs until November.
The competition resumes next weekend with a set of compelling matchups lined up. Ssese will host Bululi at Lutoboka ground, Kyadondo squares off against Bulemeezi at Nakivubo Stadium, while Kabula entertains Ssingo at the Bakijjulula playground.
