A Pass recently disclosed the earnings he made from his involvement in the globally recognized film Queen of Katwe.
The artist, whose song Wuuyo was featured as a soundtrack in the movie, mentioned that he earned “hundreds of millions” from the royalties and streaming rights.
While discussing the revenue potential of online streaming platforms, A Pass mentioned how lucrative the industry can be when one’s music is featured in international productions.
I can’t tell you how much, but it’s in hundreds of millions. It’s the truth.
The Queen of Katwe movie, directed by Mira Nair and starring Lupita Nyong’o, is based on the life of Phiona Mutesi, a Ugandan girl from Katwe who rises from poverty to become an international chess champion.
A Pass further revealed that Wuuyo was not the only track that made it into the movie. Four of his songs were featured, even though only two were initially credited.
Surprisingly, some of these tracks, such as Kyempulira, weren’t popular hits at the time, yet they still found their place in the film’s soundtrack. Kyempulira, for instance, has fewer than 5,000 views on YouTube, a stark contrast to the assumption that more YouTube views equate to more success.
And that’s the misconception—people think if you have the most views on YouTube, you make the most.
