Kampala University Celebrates 26 Years of Sports Excellence, Reveals Plans of Making Luweero Campus a Complex | Voice of Bugerere

Without a doubt, Kampala University is one of the sports giants in the country, besides investing a lot of cash in different sports championships, it has produced a number of super stars who have lifted the country’s flag very high in various disciplines. 

For starters, Kampala University was established in 1999 with it’s main campus set on the shores of Lake Victoria, the Vision bearer is the Man with 50 titles, Prof. Badru Ddungu Kateregga, since then to date, the Capital Chartered University has five campuses; Ggaba (main campus), Jinja, Luweero, Masaka and Mutundwe. 

Besides excelling in academics, Kampala University has won a number of championships in various disciplines and their trophy cabin is one of the biggest among the top varsities in the country. 

In a nutshell, Kampala University has lifted two University Football League trophies, 2013 and 2016, won a number of trophies in University games and East Africa, the most recent ones are; the East Africa Male Netball trophy, the Volleyball Serie B women league trophy, all this geared up the University administration to host awards dinner on Thursday to celebrate the 26 years of sports excellence. 

This event has attracted a number of big names in sports industry; the commissioner of Physical Education in the Ministry of Education and Sports, Rev. Canon. Duncans Mugumya was the chief guest accompanied with FUFA CEO, Edgar Watson, AUUS president, Penninah Kabenge, Netball Uganda president, Jocelyn Ucanda and other dignitaries.

The University’s alumni also attended, Nicolas Ssebwato, Nicolas Kabonge,Saidi Mayanja, Halimah Nakaayi, Abel Eturude and others who were awarded for Achievers’ accolades.

The University’s vice chancellor, Prof. Badru Ddungu Kateregga revealed why they decided to host this glamourious awards dinner. 

“It means a lot because we have never done it before” Prof. Kateregga stated. “I don’t think that there is any institution that has ever tried it to remember 26 years of sports excellence, we have done a lot in sports, many have never heard of, so it’s the chance for them to know that Kampala University is the sporting giant in Uganda.” Prof. 

“We’re not noise makers, we do one event and the whole nation gets to know who we’re.” Professor bragged. 

At the same event, the Dean of students, Augustine Mugalu revealed that they have plans to make Luweero Campus a sports complex and it’s in their dreams to host University games in near future.

“We have come a long way, I joined this University as a sports tutor in 2013, I found them won a number of trophies.” The current Dean of students, Augustine Mugalu revealed to this website.

“26 years has been quiet a journey that we need to talk about, the ground we’re celebrating from, you can see only grass but before it was only stones, it’s where we used to train from and go and win trophies.”

“We’re in plans of building better structures for our games, Luweero campus has much more land where we can put everything that we would have wanted. The future is very bright because now we have the right people in place, I want to assure you that the right people are back, we want to make Luweero a sports complex and we’re also hope that we shall one day host the University games and East Africa games.” Mugalu stated. 

The Sports Tutor and the big brain behind the event, Martha Soigi asserted that they want to make the awards dinner and annual event.

“This is just the beginning, we’re planning to hold this event every year, and I believe the next one will be bigger than this, we thought about it before, but I wasn’t in our minds that it will be a huge thing, media has hyped it a lot and you made this event a great one.” Martha Soigi, Kampala University Sports Tutor. 

The event also hosted top musicians who made the night colorful; Vinka and B2C.
