The match day three of the Pepsi University Football League continues to produce shocking results and today, the title contenders, Uganda Christian University shockingly fall to Kabale University.
The side that swallowed six a week back when they visited St Lawrence University at Kavule, Kabale University bounced back and registered a 1-0 win against the former champions UCU on Friday in Kabale.
Atugonza Stuart scored the only goal that secured three points for the hosts and sinks the visitors into the Qualification mathematics.
The encounter that came immediately after the downpour, UCU purely started well with their possessive style of play and in only two minutes, they gotten a scoring opportunity but never utilized it.
UCU continued to play good football and in the 24th minute, they won a penalty after centre referee noticing a handball in Kabale’s box, Opio Allan squandered the chance when his penalty take was saved by Wutwali Derrick for a corner kick. However, two minutes later, in the 27th minute, Atugonza Stuart head the hosts into the lead.
UCU kept on pressing for a goal but they rarely went on target, Kabale resorted to sitting back with an aim of capitalizing on counter attacks.
The hosts left the ball with the visitors but the visitors failed to convert any chance to the final whistle.
This is one of the poorest starts for UCU in the recent past, securing only two points and a goal in three games, sitting on the bottom of table putting their qualification chances in dilemma.
The tactician, Jimmy Kintu accepted that indeed they’re not doing well especially in scoring which has been their strongest point.
Surely this is not a good run for us, it’s one of the low seasons that we have not performed well, we need to do something and put ourselves together so that we save the situation. ” Says coach Jimmy Kintu.
“We’re one of the teams that score many goals in the tournament but until now we have one goal, all we know that’s football, all we have to do is to go back and find the solution” he added.
With the three games remaining on card, UCU has to register maximum points against St Lawrence, YMCA and Kabale at home if they’re to qualify to quarter final.
Nsubuga Farouk leaned the win at the change of system of play.
“We have managed to get a win against UCU, it’s because we have changed the system and we had some new players coming in to boost the team that’s why you see that we’re a bit now attacking and we managed to get a goal.” Kabale University tactician, Nsubuga Farouk said.
Now Kabale moved to four points in three games.
The league shall continue on Sunday when Uganda Martyrs University hosts IUEA at Nkozi.
