Controversial Da Mighty Family comedian Sammy Okanya who was arrested last week during the #March2Parliament protests has been charged with ‘common nuisance’ and remanded to Luzira prison.

Okanya was remanded after he appeared before the Buganda Road Magistrate’s court in the absence of his lawyers and remanded until the 19th of August when he will return to the court for his bail application.

NUP’s Secretary General (SG), Lewis Rubongoya stated that Okanya was arraigned before the court with the Magistrate, State Attorney, and clerk only present despite some lawyers who were waiting outside.

Our brother Sammy Okanya aka Mighty Family was this afternoon smuggled into Buganda Road Magistrate’s court in the absence of his lawyers, charged with ‘common nuisance’ and remanded to Luzira Prison until the 19th of August!

He told me that he was delivered into the Magistrate’s chambers only in the presence of the Magistrate, the State Attorney and clerk, even when some lawyers were waiting outside court.

He added that he was tortured by the military men while he was in detention at the Central Police Station (CPS).

NUP’s SG maintains that despite the mistreatment that Sammy has gone through during his detention, he remains spirited in the struggle.

After spending one week under illegal detention at CPS! I checked on him briefly before he was driven off to prison and he told me how he was tortured so many times while detained at CPS. He said the beatings were largely administered by military men even when he was detained at a police station. Despite all this, he remains of strong spirit! Grateful to everyone involved in assisting these innocent citizens who find themselves trapped by the repressive state machinery.
