The Uganda Open Taekwondo Championship successfully climaxed on Sunday at Lugogo Indoor Arena with Police Taekwondo Club lifting the overall trophy.
The three days championship commenced on Friday with weigh-in, registration of the participants and a day workshop for the referees, has climaxed on Sunday with awarding ceremony that was graced by ASP Hadija Namutebi as the Guest of Honor.
ASP. Hadija Namutebi thanked the organizers and the participants for putting up a great show.
“I am the director responsible for sports in Police, so I know what it takes to have a team competing in a tournament, the resources needed, the training and the likes, so I thank Taekwondo Uganda for this arrangement. As sports people, the mere fact that we have all participated, we’re all winners, let the positions don’t discourage us, we have played and enjoyed, this is a platform that exposed us, so let us lift our morale for other opportunities to come.” Said ASP Hadija Namutebi in her speech.
According to Mark Ogwang, the Taekwondo federation organising secretary at least 224 participants from different regions of Uganda competed in this year’s Open tournament.
The clubs which competed in this year’s Open include; Uganda Police taekwondo club, Uganda Prison taekwondo club, UPDF taekwondo club, CSCA taekwondo club, Bombo Army taekwondo club, Ndejje University taekwondo club, Tororo taekwondo club.
Some of the winners in different categories include; Amongi Rebecca from Police taekwondo club, Akello Suzan from Uganda Prison.
The overall performance;
Girls category Kyorugi
1-UPDF with 4 Gold medals,6 Silver and 3 Bronze.
2-Police taekwondo club with 4 Gold medals,3 Silver and 4 Bronze.
3-Tororo taekwondo club with 1 Bronze medal.
Men’s category Kyorugi
1-Uganda Police taekwondo club with 7 Gold medals,4 Silver and 5 bronze medals.
2-CSCA with 5 Gold medals, 6 Silver and 8 bronze medals.
3-Makerere University taekwondo club with 2 Gold medals
OVERALL WINNERS
1-Police taekwondo club with 14 Gold medals,8 Silver and 10 Bronze.
2-Uganda Prison with 7 Gold medals,7 Silver and the 9 Bronze.
3-UPDF with 5 Gold medals,11 silver and 12 Bronze.
