The 13th edition of Eastern Africa University Games nears climax with Ndejje University continues to bully others with more gold medals.
Uganda Christian University used experience to dethrone Kampala University following a win in Netball finals held on Thursday at Maseno University ground in Kenya.
The Mukono based University, UCU beat Kampala University 37-34 to take the 2024 Netball trophy and gold medal.
UCU head coach, Nelson James Bogere asserted the secret behind the Netball success and in the same line, Kampala University head coach, Jesse Assiimwe revealed the reason as to why his side failed to defend the title they won in 2022.
“Kampala University is a very good team, we had to fight and fight to see that we win, I thank my girls because they had a good composer in the game.” Said UCU head coach Nelson James Bogere.
“I am happy with my girls, almost the whole team is new, this has been their first time to play East Africa.” Said Jesse Assiimwe. “This is a new team, losing with a difference of three goals against a team that has been together for years and have experience is a boost that in the coming years, we are going to be stronger.” He added.
In the classification match, Bugema University beat Makerere University Business School 52-47 to win the bronze medal.
In women’s football, Makerere University beat Uganda Christian University 5-3 on penalty following a goalless draw in normal time and won the trophy.
Kampala University settled for a bronze medal after beating the hosts, Maseno University 1-0 in the third place playoff.
In men’s football Islamic University in Uganda won a bronze medal after beating Ardhi University 6-5 in penalties following a one all draw in normal time.
The men’s final shall be played on Friday and it’s between Uganda Martyrs University and Makerere University.
Ndejje University defended their trophy in men’s handball while Kampala University settled for a silver medal in the women’s category after losing to Kenyatta University 28-25 in the final.
On Friday, the tournament will be climaxing and currently Ndejje University tops the medals table with 32 golds with a total of 94 Medals. United States International University (Kenya) and UCU tie on 15 gold medals, Makerere University with 13, MUBS with 8,Gulu 7, other Universities from Uganda with gold medals include; Kampala University (3), MUST, Bishop Stuart University.
