Some days are not bad only in the office but also on the field of play, St Lawrence University can testify the saying basing on their performance on Wednesday at Buwambo.
The 2022 losing finalists, St Lawrence University lost their first group stage game this season after falling two times against YMCA Comprehensive in an action packed encounter honored on Wednesday evening.
Kiseka John and Kigenyi Benon Vianey were on target for the hosts to register the season’s maiden win and even go top of group C.
With eight minutes into the high tempo match, Kiseka John with a sharp tap in, handed YMCA a lead, thanks to Kigenyi Benon assist.
Apart from conceding an early goal, the misery for St Lawrence was just began. In the 34th minute, their custodian, Mubiru Patrick got a head injury and was stretched off the pitch, the side didn’t have a second choice goalkeeper, instead, team’s captain, Balondemu David Lukisi had to go between the sticks.
The side maintained until the end halftime break.
15 minutes into the second half, St Lawrence University Davis Nnono Ssozi was given a straight red card after the fourth official reported to centre referee of coach’s endless assaults to the match officials.
While the coach was moving off the touchline, the fans of both sides got confrontation to each other, and some exchanged punches and one of St Lawrence University fan was hit with a tough punch and went unconscious for some good minutes before getting medical attention.
All that happened when the game is paused, the scoff took like ten minutes before the game resumed, thanked to YMCA security that brought the situation to order.
Upon the resumption of the match, St Lawrence University got some good moments and went for goal for at least on three occasions they were close but Isabirye Peter stood tall for his side to remain in the lead.
In the 80th minute, Kigenyi Benon Vianey doubled the lead for the hosts with a world class finish, left Lukisi helpless in the goal posts.
The win took YMCA Comprehensive to five points in three games and currently tops group C.
The league will continue on Thursday as Muteesa I Royal University hosts Mbarara University of Science and Technology.
