Why has hip-hop struggled to find a big fanbase in Uganda? Rapper Mun G explains

Rapper Mun G claims, “Uganda is not meant for rappers,” on why hip-hop has struggled to find a big fanbase within the country.

According to the rapper, Ugandans are naturally drawn to love songs rather than complex rap and hip-hop, which he believes is why the genre hasn’t thrived locally.

Mun G explains that one of the biggest challenges for hip-hop artists in Uganda is gaining the support of women fans.

It’s hard to prosper in Uganda (as an artist) without the women fanbase, and not many women love hip-hop.

He suggests that to connect with more Ugandan fans, especially women, rappers need to “tone it down” and make their music more accessible.

The rapper goes on to say that the essence of hip-hop lies in its poetry and punchlines. However, he argues that this style may feel confusing or less engaging for Ugandan audiences, especially when many fans lean toward love songs.
