Men Netball: Kampala University, the Champions of East Africa Eyes Diamond Challenge Title in South Africa | Voice of Bugerere

After winning their third historical East Africa Netball championship title in Zanzibar, Kampala University feel geared up for the Diamond Challenge in South Africa late this year. 

Kampala University men’s netball team landed on the land on Friday morning and they were handed a champions’ welcome by the University officials and the male netball patron in Uganda, Hon. Sarah Nkonge Muwonge. 

To lift their third title in Zanzibar, Kampala University finished ahead of WOB Netball club following a stalemate in the last match of the tournament (37-37).

Kamoga Ronald, Finance consultant and General duties in the office of the vice chancellor hailed the performance of the boys and confirmed that the University will represent the country in the 2025 October Diamond Challenge in South Africa. 

“This performance means a lot to us, we have invested a lot of money in sports as a university and this is an achievement that we’re receiving returns for investment.” Says Kamoga Ronald.

“We have got to learn that there is another tournament that is going to take place in October in South Africa, so as a university we’re committed to ensure that we finance the very team to participate in this tournament” he added.

The sport’s patron at the University, Hon. Sarah Nkonge Muwonge thanked the University prof. Badru Ddungu Kateregga.

“Men’s netball is not common in the country, so I thank Kampala University and Prof. Kateregga for investing money in men’s netball, if Netball is to join olympic games, men’s netball is a must , so I am happy that I saw it and the prof. accepted to invest.” Sarah Nkonge. 

The sports tutor, Martha Soigi also expressed her excitement.

“This morning I am so excited that my men’s netball team emerged champions of East Africa, after winning the national championships in Busia, they got the zeal and energy to train and get prepared for Zanzibar and now they are here with the trophy.” Martha Soigi, Kampala University sports Tutor.

The skipper, Kizito John stated why they won the title. 

“We went when we were prepared for the tournament, we were training well, we first tested ourselves in national rallies and it helped us to win even though we faced challenges against other teams.” Said Kizito John, Kampala University skipper.

For starters, Kampala University won the title in 2019, 2022 in Kamwokya and now 2025 and if they go to South Africa, they will be the first Ugandan Club to feature in Diamond Challenge.
