The 2019 Pepsi University Football League champions, Uganda Christian University thumped Kabale University 5-1 in an encounter honoured on Thursday at UCU grounds- Mukono.
Goals for UCU were scored by Oyaka Geoffrey, Wambuga Marvin, Kyomuhendo Peter and Abiti Harry who had a brace on the day and the consolation for Kabale came from Agaba Jovin.
Since they were winless in the past three league encounters this season, the cardinals went so aggressive in the opening minutes and in space of seven minutes, they were two goals up.
Oyaka Geoffrey from the tight angle on the left win inside the box he fired the ball at the back of the net, only two minutes into the first stanza, he sent the hosts into an early celebrations.
Five minutes later, UCU won a corner kick from the right side of the pitch, swang in well to meet Wambuga Marvin who went tall for a powerful header to double the lead for the hosts in the seventh minute.
The visitors who were too shaky in defence and uncomfortable with the ball in the first 10 minutes, tried to stabilise and created some good two chances and the most notable one came from Owanyi Micheal whose effort was classically saved by Mwidu Elton.
Abiti Harry extended the lead for the hosts with a thunderous strike in the 34th minute. First stanza ended 3-0 in favour of the cardinals.
In the second stanza, Abiti Harry completed his brace in the 67th minute and made it four for UCU before Kyomuhendo Peter scores the 5th with a wonderful finish.
The consolation for Kabale came late in the 83rd minute when Agaba Jovin converted from the spot kick.
The win moved UCU to second position on the Group C log, two behind the leaders, St Lawrence University while Kabale settled for the last position.
To brighten their qualification chances, UCU needs to win the two remaining fixtures against YMCA Comprehensive Institute and St Lawrence University.
